Arapaima
Arapaima is one of
the largest freshwater fishes in the world and a truly
magnificient creature. The compressed elongate body is covered
with large scales and the many sensory canals on the bony head
giveit a sculptured look. Coloration is variable; the head is
iridescent green, with the body a darker blue-green on the dorsal
surface
(including the dorsal fin) and shading through a greenish
coloration on the flanks to a paler belly. The caudal fin is
dark. Red-edged scales are particularly prominent at the back of
the body. Throughout its range, the arapaima is a high-quality
food fish.
