Arapaima

Arapaima is one of the largest freshwater fishes in the world and a truly magnificient creature. The compressed elongate body is covered with large scales and the many sensory canals on the bony head giveit a sculptured look. Coloration is variable; the head is iridescent green, with the body a darker blue-green on the dorsal surface
(including the dorsal fin) and shading through a greenish coloration on the flanks to a paler belly. The caudal fin is dark. Red-edged scales are particularly prominent at the back of the body. Throughout its range, the arapaima is a high-quality food fish.

Distribution: The Amazon River system. Size: Up to 4m (13.1 ft).
